Annexe III

For the typicality rating, condition, participants were given standard typicality instructions as follows :

‘’ ... rate each word according to how typical or atypical it is as a member of the category. In other words, you have to decide how good or representative an example each word is of the category named. To do this, please give a rating to each word by circling a number on the scale to the right of the word. A 10 means that the word is a very typical, representative member of the category, and a 1 means that the word is completely unrelated to the category. Use the other numbers on the scale between 1 and 10 to indicate increasing degrees of typicality...’’

An example was then given for the category of Flowers. Items were listed again in alphabetic and reverse alphabetic orders for respective halves of the group of participants, and order of categories was balanced across participants. Typicality rating were not subjected to a retest.
