3. Perspectives
Il serait tout d’abord intéressant de tester l’hypothèse du processus de redescritpion représentationnelle comme moteur de changements développementaux sur laquelle se fonde le modèle théorique de Karmiloff-Smith (1990, 1992, 1999), comme le préconise l’auteur, à travers l’examen des circuits cérébraux intervenant selon l’âge des enfants et/ou leurs déficits. En effet, concernant le format de stockage des informations visuo-spatiales, les résultats établis sur la base de l’examen de l’organisation syntaxique de dessins complexes dans le cadre de cette recherche suggérent l’exploitation de représentations imagées, verbales et/ou motrices suivant les tâches accomplies, l’âge des enfants et leur statut visuel. Ces données comportementales pourraient être confortées par des observations neuropsychologiques, au moyen de techniques d’imagerie cérébrale (IRMf ou TEP). Ces dernières permettraient de visualiser en temps réel les aires activées dans la réalisation des différentes tâches (en particulier les aires visuelles, langagières et motrices), et d’apporter la preuve, au niveau du substrat biologique, du recours à des représentations spécifiques au statut visuel des enfants, et faisant l’objet de changements au cours du développement.
En outre, comme l’ont fait Gentaz, Colé et Bara (2003) pour l’apprentissage de la lecture chez de jeunes enfants, un entraînement à la reconnaissance haptique de formes pourrait permettre de stabiliser les représentations motrices ou d’élaborer des connexions inter-représentationnelles. En particulier, l’usage de la modalité haptique pourrait conduire l’enfant à traiter les informations de façon séquentielle, et donc analytique, alors qu’il recourerait à des représentations imagées de façon implicite et rigide. Le processus de redescription représentationnelle permettrait ainsi une plus grande flexibilité cognitive. L’explicitation des représentations permettrait la construction de connexions inter-représentationnelles offrant le choix entre plusieurs alternatives en réponse à une même entrée et donc la sélection possible d’une solution adéquate et efficace. De plus, l’étude de l’effet de cet entraînement chez une population d’enfants atteints du syndrome de Williams, à laquelle s’est notamment intéressée Karmiloff-Smith ces dernières années (Grant, Karmiloff-Smith, Gathercole, Paterson, Howlin, Davies & Udwin, 1997 ; Karmiloff-Smith, 1997 ; Karmiloff-Smith, Brown, Grice & Paterson, 2001 ; Karmiloff-Smith, Tyler, Voice, Sims, Udwin, Howlin & Davies, 1998), pourrait permettre d’appréhender le caractère graduel (via la modularisation) du développement normal et atypique. Les déficits des enfants porteurs du syndrome de Williams pourraient en effet être liés à un dysfonctionnement dans le processus de redescription représentationnelle. C’est ce qui expliquerait pourquoi chez ces enfants, « certaines de leurs fonctions cognitives restent intactes, d’autres présentent des anomalies dès le départ, d’autres sont touchées au cours du développement » (Troadec & Martinot, 2003, p. 214). La perspective neuroconstructiviste de Karmiloff-Smith « ne doit pas être considérée comme un catalogue de fonctions perturbées et intactes. Ainsi une approche neuropsychologique classique et statique n’est pas appropriée pour comprendre la dynamique des troubles du développement » (idem).
Une autre piste de recherche sur le plan expérimental serait, comme nous l’avons évoqué, de poursuivre l’étude du rôle du PEC et de la familiarité des informations dans le rappel des dessins, en proposant une nouvelle version informatisée de l’expérience 7, dans laquelle nous pourrions faire varier avec précision à la fois le temps de présentation et le délai de rappel des stimuli, ainsi que la quantité d’information à encoder (nombre de formes élémentaires). Nous pourrions de cette façon approfondir l’analyse de la relation entre la capacité de maintien en mémoire des données visuo-spatiales et l’usage du PEC au cours du développement. Comme nous l’avons également proposé, le recours au paradigme de double tâche (De Ribeaupierre & al., 2000 ; Miles & al., 1996 ; Pickering, 2001) dans cette même expérience, combinant la tâche principale à une tâche secondaire verbale ou visuo-spatiale (ou à aucune de ces deux tâches concourantes dans une condition contrôle) permettrait de déterminer le rôle des codages verbal et imagé dans le rappel des deux types de dessins (composés de formes élémentaires familières ou abstraites).
Par ailleurs, comme l’a fait Gallina (1998) pour l’apprentissage d’un itinéraire décrit verbalement, il serait intéressant d’évaluer les liens entre les capacités d’imagerie visuelle des enfants et l’usage du PEC à différentes périodes au cours du développement dans les tâches présentées dans un format propositionnel ou faisant l’objet d’une exploration haptique, pour lesquelles le recours à des représentations imagées passe par une médiation (accès indirect). Il serait ainsi possible de rendre compte du rôle des représentations imagées suivant l’âge des enfants. Une corrélation significative suggèrerait l’exploitation de représentations imagées dans l’accomplissement des tâches, alors qu’une corrélation non significative conforterait l’idée selon laquelle les enfants pourraient recourir (de façon directe) à des représentations non imagées (verbales ou motrices).
Les résultats issus de cette recherche présentent également un intérêt sur le plan pédagogique. En effet, celles-ci montrent que les jeunes enfants de sept ans connaissent d’importantes difficultés à résoudre un problème lorsque les informations qui le constituent sont textuelles, alors qu’ils résolvent le même problème beaucoup plus facilement lorsque les informations sont présentées sous forme imagée (expérience 8). L’ « habillage » du problème (Bastien, 1987) apparaît donc déterminant dans la représentation et la résolution de celui-ci. La représentation imagée des données textuelles semble constituer une étape importante dans la résolution de problèmes chez les enfants encore peu familiarisés au langage écrit ou témoignant de difficultés en lecture. L’activité inférentielle liée au raisonnement logique mis en jeu dans la résolution du problème fait notamment appel aux capacités attentionnelles et mnésiques de l’enfant. Or, la présentation textuelle des données est susceptible de perturber cette activité inférentielle en sollicitant de manière trop importante les ressources cognitives du jeune enfant dans les traitements des informations langagières (décodage et compréhension des mots), limitant alors les ressources disponibles pouvant être dédiées à l’élaboration d’une représentation intégrant les données du problème. Les traitements relatifs à la lecture s’automatisant au cours du développement (les enfants plus âgés possédant une plus grande maîtrise du langage écrit) ainsi que les capacités mnésiques, les enfants plus âgés seraient alors en mesure d’opérer un raisonnement quelle que soit la version, imagée ou textuelle, du problème. Pour les enfants les plus jeunes, encore peu familiarisés au langage écrit, il s’avère donc préférable de conseiller une résolution du problème suivant une procédure comprenant deux étapes successives : 1) la transformation des informations propositionnelles en informations imagées, puis 2) la résolution du problème (coordination des informations), à partir de la version imagée nouvellement créée.
Enfin, dans une orientation pratique, les stratégies d’exécution dans les tâches de copie, de rappel et de coordination d’informations locales étant révélatrices du fonctionnement cognitif de l’enfant, leur observation pourrait constituer un moyen simple et rapide d’investigation et de détection d’éventuels troubles ou déficits cognitifs dans l’examen neuropsychologique. Connaissant le procédé d’exécution utilisé spontanément par l’enfant pour reproduire une série de dessins composés de formes élémentaires emboîtées (le procédé adopté reflétant le mode de structuration ou de traitement perceptif des stimuli), il est alors possible d’évaluer les capacités cognitives (capacités de rétention des informations visuo-spatiales dans la tâche de rappel, ou capacités inférentielles dans la tâche de coordination d’informations locales) du sujet. L’organisation syntaxique du dessin pourrait donc être utilisée comme un moyen d’investigation de processus cognitifs, les épreuves proposées pouvant servir d’outils diagnostiques du fonctionnement de composantes cognitives.
