Pigafetta points to the island and asks for its name. The farmer, thinking he was pointing to the coconut tree, answers in Sarawakian Malay: buah nyiur [buahnjo:] (« coconut »). Pigafetta then records that the island is named [bohnjo:] and spells it « Bor-neo ».
