British North Borneo Co. Renonce à ses prétentions sur le Berau. (cf 1881) 1882 « The decision issued from the fog-veiled offices of the Borneo Co. [to abandon claims over the Berau district] darkened for Almayer the brilliant sunshine of the Tropics » (Conrad 1895a, p.28, ll.3-5). Visite d’une frégate néerlandaise.
British North Borneo Co. « Dent’s association […] managed to persuade the British Government to grant it a royal charter (1 November 1881) » (Hall 1981, p.610). 1881 C’est l’année-clé, qui permet de dater tous les autres événements d’Almayer, et incidemment d’An Outcast of the Islands. « The stir made in the whole of the [Borneo] island by the establishment of the British Borneo Co. [sic dans le texte imprimé. Dans le manuscrit : ‘the British Nth Borneo’ (Eddleman & Higdon 1994, p.210)] affected even the sluggish flow of the Pantai life » (Conrad 1895a, p.26, ll.32-34). Or, c’est aussi l’année du retour, de « Nina’s unexpected appearance in Sambir » (Conrad 1895a, p.24, ll.12-13.). Almayer construit sa « folie » (Conrad 1895a, p.26, l.36).

Année décisive dans les tensions anglo-néerlandaises, d’où la plaisanterie prolongée sur la guerre des drapeaux à Berau quand le Néerlandais Almayer hisse « the Union Jack », les couleurs de Lingard (Conrad 1896a, p.176), et quand le Britannique Abdulla laisse Willems hisser le drapeau néerlandais (Conrad 1896a, p.179), ce qui obligera Jim-Eng à choisir son camp (« Said he was an Englishman » (Conrad 1896a, p.182)) et permettra à Willems de piquer Almayer pour ce drapeau qui n’est pas le sien (« that flag you have hoisted – which, by the by, is not yours » (Conrad 1896a, p.185)) et de saisir sa poudre légalement, puisque « this coast is under the protection of the Netherlands » (Ibid.).

In that year also, with the opening of the Suez canal the position of Acheh at the northern tip of Sumatra became of far greater strategic importance than ever before » (Hall 1981, p.593)		 1869 Tournant dans An Outcast of the Islands. 1868 Abdulla « had found the river a couple of years ago » (Conrad 1896a, p.110), en comptant de 1870. C’est aussi l’année où Willems commence à mener les affaires d’Hudig à sa guise : « For the last two years of his stay in Macassar the confidential clerk had been managing all the local trade of the house under a very slight supervision only on the part of the master » (Conrad 1896a, p.130).

Naissance, le 25 août (Sherry 1966, p.100, n.*) de Jim Lingard, mort en 1916 à 54 ans selon sa fille (Warren 1977, p.26, n.22).		 1862 Terminus ad quem de l’arrivée de Willems chez Hudig, après que Lingard l’eut formé : « He […] became soon perfect in English […]. As he grew older his trading instincts developed » (Conrad 1896a, p.17), ce qui laisse entendre que quelques années s’écoulent après 1857. Mais si Willems « knew [Almayer] when he was at Hudig’s » (Conrad 1896a, p.43), c’est que l’outcast est lui-même entré chez Hudig avant qu’Almayer n’en parte, soit avant 1863.
  1861 Arrivée d’Almayer à Macassar chez Hudig, un an et quelques mois avant d’épouser la fille adoptive de Lingard en 1863 : « After a year or so Lingard […] took a sudden […] fancy to the young man [= Almayer] » (Conrad 1895a, p.9, ll.16-18) ; « Months slipped by » (Ibid., l.26).
Fin de la seconde guerre anglo-chinoise. 1860  
  1859 Lingard se bat contre les pirates sulu et adopte une des leurs, jeune fille trouvée blessée, quatre ans avant de la marier à Almayer à sa sortie du couvent en 1863 : « during those long four years… » (Conrad 1895a, p.19, l.20). Ce combat n’est ni le seul, ni le premier : « after his first – and successful – fight with the sea robbers »… (Conrad 1896a, p.14. Voir aussi l’action de The Rescue, Conrad 1920a).
Captain William Lingard découvre le chenal ouvrant sur l’amont du Berau, chenal qui porte encore son nom, « the ‘Baak van Lingard’ of official charts and surveys, […] some time between 1859 & 1863 » (Warren 1977, p.23). circa 1859 - 1863 « He had discovered a river ! » (Conrad 1895a, p.8, l.21).
« Seconde guerre de Chine. […] En 1858 […] une flotte franco-anglaise […] bombardait les forts de Takou, à l’embouchure du Pei-Ho » (Crokaert 1947, pp.337-338). 1858 Action de The Rescue, puisqu’au même moment, « the French are going along with us [British] as they did in the Crimea five years ago » (Conrad 1920a, p.20) (voir 1853), et que s’amorce une guerre avec la Chine : « they say there is going to be a war with China » (Conrad 1920a, p.20).
Naissance de Joshua Lingard (Sherry 1966, p.100, n.*) 1857 Abdulla atteint « the Gulf of Suez, and this was the limit of his wanderings westward. He was then twenty-seven » (Conrad 1896a, p.109). Avant le percement du canal, Suez était effectivement un cul-de-sac. Abdulla succède à son père dans l’archipel malais.
Traité de Paris sur la guerre de Crimée.




Naît Johanna van Lieshout qu’épousera Olmeijer en 1874 (Warren 1977, p.24, n.16). 		1856 Tom Lingard sauve Hassim et Immada à « Wajo », et prépare leur retour « for two years » (Conrad 1920a, p.106), jusqu’en 1858 où se déroule The Rescue.

Willems a bientôt 17 ans (« Seventeen », Conrad 1896a, p.16) quand il rencontre Lingard, « fourteen years » (Conrad 1896a, p.41) avant l’action principale en 1870.
  1855 Terminus ad quem avant lequel Lingard reçoit son titre de « Rajah Laut » (Conrad 1896a, p.14), puisque « he had carried it many years already when the boy Willems ran barfooted on the deck of the ship Kosmopoliet IV » (Conrad 1896a, p.14), soit avant 1857 et sa rencontre avec Lingard.
