For the four regions, these 4 percent between the 95th and 99th percentiles of the distribution grow slowly and at the same rate over time. For instance, the AI95-99 incomes all start around $40,000 in 1917, and reach the threshold of $100,000 (constant dollars) in 1966 for the West and Midwest, 1968 for the South, and 1964 for the Northeast. Barro and Sala-i-Martin (1995) conclude that states grew roughly at the same rate over the past century: this is true only for the fractiles AI90-95 and AI95-99.
