Method

Two versions of the set of melodies of Experiment 1 were synthesized: one with piano tones and one with pure tones. For piano tones, the melodies were synthesized from midi files to wave files with the Timidity++ software (http://timidity.sourceforge.net/) and the TimGM6mb.sf2 soundfont (i.e., an acoustic piano timbre). For pure tones, the melodies were synthesized with the MATLAB software (MathWorks) using sine waves with 20 ms fade-in and 20 ms fade-out.

The model of Leman (2000) was run with the local echo (T_local) equals to 0.5 s and the global echo (T_global) equals to 1.5 s. In addition, to test in how far the observed results are dependent of the chosen echo parameters, simulations varying the echo parameters (from 0.5s to 2s in steps of 0.1s for the long echo, and from 0.1s to 0.5s in steps of 0.05 for the short echo) were conducted.
