2.2. Questionnaire and type of survey

The data were collected by means of a self-administered cross-sectional survey that collected several types of data:

  • sociodemographic data: age, gender, socio-occupational category (SOC), educational level;
  • data related to driving and transport: driving licence (type, obtained date), a series of 21 violations such as ignoring a stop sign, drinking alcohol and driving, no seat belt, telephoning while driving, crossing a continuous white line, failing to indicate… and average mileage driven (both private and professional), accidents in last five years (damage-only and injury);
  • data related to behaviour and lifestyle (focused on the use and mental representation of transportation);
  • a personality profile (the Eysenck personality inventory (EPI), form A, adapted to France in 1971 and marketed by the Centre de Psychologie Appliquée (C.P.A) (Eysenck 1968; Eysenck and Eysenck Sybil 1971). This test provided 3 scores for each individual: the N score (the tendency to develop neurosis), the E score (extroversion) and the L score (lying). The type of control locus was assessed using question 50 of Rotter’s Internal control questionnaire (Rotter 1966).
