B.1.7. Conclusion

The present results demonstrated genuine salience-based effects, which appeared early and lasted long. In the same experiments, endogenous influences either enhanced or counteracted these effects. These results supported the classical hypothesis that salience effects could last long when they were not harmful for the task at hand. They also (re-)incited to carefully control any possible endogenous influence when assessing these salience effects. On the other hand, the present results were consistent with the feature-based account of salience and endogenous control of attention. More studies are needed to reconcile these classical accounts with the recent data introduced by Becker (2008, 2010).
