Trois contradictions structurent l'oeuvre photographique de la Farm Security Administration (Etats-Unis - 1935-1942) : une volonté de comprendre contre un désir d'imposer un sens, une nécessité de diffuser des images contre un désir de thésauriser une archive, un projet d'ouverture sur l'avenir contre un attrait pour l'âge d'or de la pastorale. Cette thèse explore, à travers les archives photographiques et textuelles de l'agence et dans un aller retour permanent entre institution et productions, la genèse, la production et la diffusion des images de la Section historique de la FSA. Après s'être intéressée à l'histoire de la Section, l'étude aborde la problématique de la construction de territoires spécifiques par la photographie pour déboucher sur la question de la mise en oeuvre photographique d'une idéologie de gestion technocratique de la société. Cette dernière passe ici par l'élargissement progressif du domaine d'action des photographes de la campagne aux petites villes (qui constituent à la fois le prolongement naturel de l'idéologie réformiste du New Deal et la concrétisation du lieu médiant et régressif de la pastorale) et la constitution d'une archive, devenue peu à peu le lieu central de l'oeuvre de la FSA. |

The photographic work of the Farm Security Administration (1935-1942) can be seen as organized around three sets of contradictions: a desire to understand vs a desire to impart a meaning, a need to disseminate images vs a desire to build up an archive, a project for the future vs an attraction for the golden age of the pastoral.This dissertation explores sociologically, aesthetically and historically the production and dissemination of the images of the Historical section of the FSA through the photographic and textual archives of the agency.It first looks at the history of the organization, then analyzes the issue of the construction of specific territories by photographs, and eventually tackles the question of how images serve a bureaucratic view of society. In particular it looks at how photographers moved from the countryside to the small towns (which formed the locus of the reformist ideology of the New Deal and the materialization of the intermediate space of the pastoral) and how the collection/archive of images was formed and slowly became the real center of the work of the FSA. |
