The Franco-Uzbek excavations carried out, between 1993 and 1998, on the citadels of the ancient sites of Termez and Khaitabad (Uzbekistan) brought to light abundant ancient and medieval material. This material has now been integrated into a large corpus thanks to the study of the forms and decorations. The typological analysis of the ancient material (IVth BC- Vth AD) required the development of a data management system which can was able to integrate very different types of data: paste, slip, diameter; geographical or chronological references. Like all data bases, it answers data-processing criteria but also those inherent to the type of material: only edges. Such a formalization then allows the development of a statistical study with both intrinsic and extrinsic data, in order to conceive the evolution and the origin of the forms, and to validate the methodological choices carried out at the beginning of the data processing. The study tries to clarify the evolution of the two cities and replaces them in the framework of Central Asia. Because the lack of written sources, the treatment of the ancient material tries to define the importance of the culture of Bactria and its influences: Hellenistic, Kushan, Sassanid, Turkish… The ceramic productions of Termez are also associated with the events of the Islamic world during the creation of the Samanid, Ghaznevid, Ghurid kingdoms until the arrival of Gengis Khan in 1220. Later, in the XVth century, the city will be integrated into the Central Asian states centred on Balkh, Bukhara or Samarkand. |
