The objective of this study is to present a comprehensive documentation of travelers that have described the city of Alexandria since the 6th century until the arrival of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798. With this intention, using computer analysis, we compiled all the available sources in chronological order. Each traveler is described in a card which includes a biographical note and the account itself. On the whole, 251 travelers of various nationalities and all horizons were indexed. Thanks to this instrument of work, one can question these sources by key words to find the passages concerning the selected subject. In parallel, to facilitate this search, an index was carried out starting from all the compiled texts. This index is divided into three topics which include : the natural world, the human world, and the architectural world. The second chapter of this study further develops selected topics in order to foresee what one can learn from these sources. But before applying these historical data to our analysis, a study on plagiarism in the literature of travelers was essential. Indeed, during the compilation of texts, we obtained some chapters from the texts which were written by other travelers. It was important for us to underline these sources before being able to use them. Starting from information drawn from these sources, we were able to develop the following topics : trade, interdict, personal hygiene, description of Alexandria in second half of the 18th century, accesses of the Alexandria canal, religious rites, and underground constructions. |
