en The goal of this work is to show that medieval bells are a good point if view for the sociological study of medieval society. This point of view wasn't really used till this work on such a scale. About five hundreds medieval bells still survive in France. Bells bring on their body some liturgical and cultural messages that remind us the most important preoccupation. A real evolution exists during the Middle Ages in all parts of the bell: shape, inscriptions and ornaments.Bells appear during classical antiquity as small bells and before they exist as great bell in the far east (China for example). The use of great bells that allow the calling of people, peculiarly for religious meetings begun in the first time of the Christianity after the end of the clandestine period. The first texts that reminds us of the use of bells date from the end of the fourth century of the common era and the writings of Gregori Turonensis are very interesting for us.If the first bells, very seldom conserved, don't have good qualities regarding their sound and seem to be just objects for sending a message, very quickly, the musical sensibility became a point of the first importance. So the bell-founders tried to produce bells with good sounds for the sensibility of the period. Till the year thousand, we can find some texts that explain this. After the varying shapes of the Ancient Middle Ages, the Romanesque period shows the beginning of the standardisation. Till the thirteenth century we can see bells with almost the actual shape. After, there will be only a few changes to get a better sound. The acoustical principles that produce sounds in a bell are used in this time even if they are not very precisely known. The decorative registers in their place and in their subject are also fixed during the Gothic Time.
