This research deals with the song, a popular artistic expression, which occupies an important place in music listening practices. The song is approached in its existence through its ordinary listening practice by a listener, that is to say through an inattentive and iterative listening, and therefore the song is approached as an audible, sound and musical whole. Consequently, the object is considered from the angle of its expression, named “multi-modal”, since its substance is both a vocal and an instrumental one.The research is empirical and experimental, and is based on a narrow corpus made up of thirteen songs, selected for their belonging to a domain labelled “French song”.Our semiotic analyses are built at the junction of two theoretical proposals. The first one, by P. Schaeffer, concerns the perceptive activity of listening; the second one, elaborated by J. Geninasca, concerns the interpretation of aesthetic discourses. We build the following hypotheses:The listener is likely to set up the object as a “whole of meaning” from a double seizure, a musical one and a sound one. He elaborates “coherence strategies” and “cohesion strategies”, setting up that way the sound continuum as a discourse. Then, the setting up of the “whole of meaning” takes shape within the enunciative apparatus and its two poles – enunciator / enunciatee – whose semiotic stakes are concentrated in this central notion: the voice. The voice syncretises all the semiotic mechanisms at work: as the place of the doing and the being of the enunciator-performer, the voice embodies the very presence of the being-in-the-world; as the place of operations of seizure of the object by the listener, the voice builds up his listening as real-life experience. Last, as the place of conjunction of presence and experience, the voice both generates and achieves the existence of the object as a meaning object. |
